I have only found one record of a Knatz serving in the US Civil War. I obtained this record from the National Park Service database called “Civil War Soldiers and Sailor’s Sytem.” The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System is a computerized database containing very basic facts about servicemen who served on both sides during the Civil War. The initial focus of the CWSS is the Names Index Project, a project to enter names and other basic information from 6.3 million soldier records in the National Archives. The facts about the soldiers were entered from records that are indexed to many millions of other documents about Union and Confederate Civil War soldiers maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration. There are actually two entries, though it may be the same individual entered twice in the database. The entries are as follows:
1. Knatz, H Confederate Infantry 2nd Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Local Defense
2. Knatz, Henry Confederate Infantry, 2nd Battalion, Virginia Infantry, Local Defense (Waller’s) (Quartermaster Battalion)
A copy of his compiled military service file was obtained from the National Archives and given below:
